Where Jesus' Love is Lived!
The Otsego United Methodist Church is a very special place where Jesus’ Love is lived. The Missions Team is just one of many compassionate groups in our church which strive to share the Love of God and carry on the Love and Kindness shown by Jesus Christ while He walked this earth. The Missions Team, currently Co-Chaired by Nyla Merrill & Becky Laws, is inspired and driven by the love and compassion that He showed in caring for others. Jesus’ words in Matthew 25: 35-40 lead us to serve Him by devoting our efforts to spreading kindness and help of all kinds to those in need, both locally and worldwide.
I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, For I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ Matthew 25:35-40, ESV
Locally, we support:
Christian Neighbors, the food pantry and helping agency, by raising funds via the Soup Supper we sponsor each year in March, by supporting the Post Office Food Drive, by collecting and offering weekly food donations, by monetary contributions, and in many other ways.
Local Elementary School Children, by providing handmade hats and mittens to help keep the children warm in the winter months.
Back Pack Buddies, a program that provides back packs of food for children who may not get regular meals on the weekends.
Potluck in the Park in Kalamazoo, by annually hosting an afternoon in the fall in which the homeless are given a warm meal and are encouraged to take what they want from a large assortment of donated clothing, shoes, coats, gloves, scarves, backpacks, and homemade quilts supplied by dedicated local Christians.
A Local Mobile Home Park, by ministering to the children there, hosting an annual back-to-school party in which we offer lunch, gently used and new clothing, school supplies, free back-to-school haircuts, face painting, fellowship and fun. For Mother’s Day, we provide the materials and flowers and help each child make and decorate potted flowers and cards for their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and friends. At Christmastime, we supply Christmas baskets filled with enough food to prepare a Christmas dinner. The Christmas basket ministry extends throughout many of our local communities.
Relay for Life, by collecting monetary donations and gathering volunteers who participate in the annual 24-hour relay at the Allegan County Fairgrounds. Many of our volunteers spend the night walking laps to honor monetary pledges of donations to the American Cancer Society.
Worldwide, we support:
Any Solder, by collecting personal supplies of all kinds and writing personal notes of thanks and encouragement to those who are serving our country, then boxing the supplies and notes and sending them overseas.
Children in 3rd World Countries, by sending “Christmas Shoeboxes” filled with personal supplies, toys, stuffed animals and stories of The Word, translated into their own languages. This mission is sponsored by the Franklin Graham led ministry, “Samaritan’s Purse.”
